If you’ve been captivated by the surreal landscapes in the movie The Banshees of Inisherin, and want to follow in Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson’s footsteps, there’s a handy locations trail.

The movie was filmed on location on Achill Island, Co. Mayo, and also on Inishmore, one of the Aran Islands in Co. Galway. Both destinations are on the west coast of Ireland. Achill Tourism has come up with a detailed Banshees of Inisherin Locations Trail.

They are also offering tour guides for coach parties so that a first-hand account of the locations and the stories surrounding the filming of The Banshees of Inisherin on Achill Island can be made available.

The detailed guide provides photographs, interesting details and insider knowledge of the many locations where the movie was filmed. It includes: Cloughmore (JJ Devines Pub), Cloughmore (Holy Statue / Fork in Road), Purteen Harbour (Village street & O’Riordan’s shop), Keem Bay (Colm Doherty’s house & beach scenes), Corrymore Lake (Mrs. McCormick’s cottage), and St. Thomas’s Church, Dugort (Mass Scenes).

On the website, you will find various interesing insights. For example “a few hundred metres along the road (westwards) from the site of Jonjo’s pub at Cloughmore is the location of a fork in the road, denoted in the movie by a statue of the Virgin Mary. The statue was a film prop, and in real life the road does not actually fork – the short path created for the film leads straight to a cliff edge!”

So fascinating, isn’t it? Whilst The Banshees of Inisherin continues to gather rave reviews globally, and its tally of nominations grows, it also offers travellers a unique opportunity to experience Ireland. Plus there’s the added charm of seeing for yourself the stunning locations where many of the movie’s scenes were shot.

The Banshees of Inisherin now has eight nominations at The Golden Globe Awards – including nominations for Colin Farrell, director Martin McDonagh, and for best comedy or musical. It will also be a family affair tonight as Banshees star Brendan Gleeson’s son, Domhnall, has also received a nomination for his role in The Patient

The Golden Globes will take place today, on January 10, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. If you’re keen to catch how The Banshees of Inisherin fares at the award, plus catch all the other action, the Golden Globes Red Carpet preshow airs on RTÉ2 at 9.05pm on Wednesday, January 11, followed by the awards ceremony at 9.35pm.
