After the inaugural 2021 Donegal Camino raised €20,000 for Cancer Care West services, it returns in 2022 from 3 to 10 September. Last year’s eight day walk showcased Donegal’s most spectacular scenery, passing through areas of coastline and hilly terrain. From the northerly point of Malin Head to Europe’s Highest Cliffs, Slieve League, the Camino attracted walkers from all corners of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

The 2022 camino is expected to be just as spectacular as the last, initiated by an Inishowen businesses woman, Peggy Stringer. Stringer created her own post-lockdown walking holiday with friends, which raised €6,000 for Cancer Care West. Casually calling it the ‘Donegal Camino’, the seed was sown and nurtured over the following winter which led to conversations with friends Deirdre McGlone and Noel Cunningham, and went onto create the Donegal Camino which will now become an annual event.

“We want to thank every one who donated to the Donegal Camino fundraising for Cancer Care West. €20,000 shows the support that’s out there for this much needed service in Donegal but also the generosity of the people” said Stringer.

“The Donegal Camino is a wonderful way to showcase our beloved Donegal in all it’s splendour and support those suffering from cancer with a view to increasing cancer services in the county.”

Cancer Care West provides practical and emotional support to people with cancer throughout the West and Northwest. The services ensure that patients don’t face cancer alone and offers support for everyone going through cancer treatment free of charge.

Richard Flaherty, CEO of Cancer Care West said: “It is so good to see that fundraising need not be a chore, as by all accounts the Donegal Camino was full of fun, laughter with craic agus ceoil thrown in!

“Due to its success people are already on standby for places for next year! Our support Centre in Letterkenny which is completely reliant on fundraising to run its vital services will benefit from the proceeds of the Camino.”

The Donegal Camino organisers are busy planning next year’s, route and details of same will be available in Spring of 2022 with dates of September 3 to 10, 2022 set for the fundraising walk which will challenge itself to create an even bigger impact in 2022.
