The Park Hotel, Dungarvan has come up with an innovative way to transform their garden into an unusual outdoor dining and drinks space. An old shipping container was converted into a bar and is the centrepiece of a beautiful garden area.
Now nestled under the mature trees of the hotel’s garden, the new bar is at the heart of the outdoor dining experience. The hotel, luckily has more than five acres of landscaped gardens with views of the Colligan River estuary near Dungarvan. The former shipping container was sourced locally and measures 10m x 20m.
Magical Woodland Glade
Adding to the ambiance of the arboreal space, strings of lights turn it into a magical “woodland glade” in the evenings. The area has been landscaped with potted plants, raised bedding, comfortable seating, large wooden barrels and picnic tables. There are also toilet facilities in the garden.
The idea for the transformation came from the General Manager, Declan Moriarty. It cost €27,000 to turn it into Waterford’s premier garden bar. Mr. Moriarty said, “we are hugely proud of our quirky garden bar. It was worth it to transform an unused area of the hotel grounds into a whole new business opportunity.”
For any other hospitality providers thinking of enhancing or improving their outdoor space the Park Hotel has four points of advice. Think sustainability, harmonise your indoor and outdoor spaces, think seasonally and adapt to your space.
The Park Hotel is part of the Flynn Hotel Group and has 84 bedrooms, 15 self-catering holiday homes and a leisure centre with 20m swimming pool. It is also close to the Waterford Greenway that links the town with the city.
