Ask Joan: What To Do If You Had a Covid-19 Vaccine Abroad

A number of people have contacted me to ask what to do as they have had their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine in other countries. I contacted the HSE and they replied:

“Once people have proof of receiving their first vaccination, they can contact HSELive to register for their second dose. Telephone number, 1800700700 in Ireland and +353 12408787 from abroad.”

Those who started their COVID-19 schedule with an unknown or unavailable vaccine should be offered one dose of any authorised COVID-19 vaccine. As all are based on the spike protein of the virus, it is likely that the second dose will boost the response to the first dose. The recipient should then be regarded as fully vaccinated. Further doses of vaccine are not required.

Those who have documentary evidence of receipt of a full course of a COVID-19 vaccine authorised by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US, the Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) in the UK or recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) should be considered fully vaccinated.
