Belfast’s 1970s punk music scene is historic – partly because of the truly great bands that emerged, but also given how it was a rare beacon of unity and neutrality in a divided city at the time.
Now, Creative Tours Belfast (www.creativetoursbelfast.com) bring the story of punk music in Belfast back to life on this walking tour, with a specialist music guide who has loved punk music since the 1970s!
Since bands like The Outcasts, Rudi, Stiff Little Fingers, Ruefrex and Victim erupted onto the scene in Belfast back in the late 1970s, Belfast punk has held a special place in music history, near and far.
According to Creative Tours: “On the walk, you will explore legendary sites in Belfast’s 1970s punk story, as told in the film ‘Good Vibrations’ about Terri Hooley, called the Godfather of Belfast punk, and his record shop and label.”
“You will see where the Good Vibrations record shop first opened, and iconic punk venues the Harp Bar and The Pound. You will also visit the city’s music hub, the Oh Yeah Music Centre, for a guided tour of its fascinating punk memorabilia and artefacts in the display cabinets of its NI Music exhibition. Your guide will paint a picture of a night out in Hill Street back in 1979, sharing her own stories of punk gigs back then – as well as introducing you to a few of the excellent punk bands performing today.”
A soundtrack of punk music will be played at each stop, including ‘70s tracks by Rudi, The Outcasts, Stiff Little Fingers, The Undertones and more, as well as tracks by contemporary punk-linked bands such as Wood Burning Savages, Problem Patterns and Cherym.
