The Newport Grainne Uaile Festival is back for 2024, promising a weekend full of family-friendly activities and great music. Taking place this Bank Holiday weekend, August 2nd to 4th in Newport, Mayo, this festival celebrates the legacy of Grainne Uaile, the famed pirate queen, with a mix of cultural, historical, and entertaining events.

What’s On

Friday, August 2nd
The festival kicks off at 8 pm with a lively parade featuring local groups and the Tonragee Pipe Band. Kids can join the Toy Tractor Run, with a prize for the best-decorated tractor. The festivities continue with the raising of the festival flag by Ava Sheridan, the Festival Queen, followed by an open-air concert by The Afters at 8:30 pm on Main Street.

Saturday, August 3rd
Start your day at 10 am with a historical walk around Newport led by local historian Michael Chambers. This is followed by the GAA U13 Boys and Girls Football Blitz and children’s novelty sports events at the Burrishoole GAA Pitch. A family treasure hunt at 2:30 pm will engage participants in a quest across town. Evening activities include bingo at Brannens on Main Street and the “Roll the Bale” event, which tests participants’ strength and stamina. The day concludes with a performance by Jive Talkin’, a Bee Gees tribute band, at 9:30 pm.

Sunday, August 4th
The final day begins with “Ceoil agus Craic” at 12:30 pm, featuring traditional tunes by the Mulloy Brothers. The afternoon Family Fun Day on Medlicott Street offers a playground paradise with various amusements, face painting, and a best-dressed lady contest. Enjoy performances by Cuilmore CCE, Caroline O’Malley’s School of Dance, and Pat Mulchrone. The festival wraps up with a sheep shearing exhibition and a closing concert by the Irish trad band Shillelagh Law at 9 pm.
