After such a mighty year for gigs in Ireland, the wheels had to come off at some point – it was just bound to happen…and it has…for news has reached us that the mighty Cheap Trick’s latest planned visit to Dublin has been cancelled.
The legendary Chicago power popsters – famous for such songs as Surrender, The Flame and I Want You to Want Me (which has, for some reason, recently been stripped of all its fun and life in favour of a sullen modern reboot for a Kerrygold butter ad, of all things!) – were due to play their first Irish gigs since 2018 (when they supported Def Leppard at the 3Arena), with their last headlining gig (at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre) being way back in 2011.
This latest visit was due to be as support to Journey on the latter’s 50th anniversary ‘Freedom Tour’, which is currently traversing the globe.
It was due to stop off at Belfast’s SSE Arena (formerly the Odyssey Arena) on November 4 and Dublin’s 3Arena the following night.
However, Journey recently announced they were cancelling the dates along with an adjacent UK run of shows due to circumstances beyond their control, which is thought to be linked with two of the band members being in a personal legal battle.
One industry insider told us this would have brought in buckets full of money into the local economy, if it had gone ahead – “not as much as Taylor Swift, AC/DC or Coldplay, but buckets full nonetheless”.
But, instead, the wait goes on…
