Ireland’s Oldest Festival – Puck Fair 2024

The town of Killorglin comes alive every year from August 10th to 12th with the historic Puck Fair, Ireland’s oldest festival. With origins that trace back over 400 years, this celebration is a must-visit!

What is the Puck Fair?

The Puck Fair, or “Aonach an Phoic” in Irish, is a three-day festival rooted in ancient traditions held in Killorglin, Kerry. The centerpiece of the festivities is the crowning of a wild mountain goat as the “King Puck,” a practice that has become the hallmark of this iconic event. The fair is believed to date back to pre-Christian times, celebrating the harvest season and the relationship between humans and nature.

The Festival Lineup

August 10th – Gathering Day

The Gathering includes the coronation parade at 5pm and the coronation of King Puck at 5.30pm, as well as a horse fair on early morning.

August 11th – Fair Day

The second day of Puck is Fair Day. As with the other days, there will be plenty of live music, entertainment, a fun fair and street food to enjoy!

August 12th – Scattering Day

On the last day of the festival, King Puck is dethroned and festival closes with a midnight fireworks display. This year Scattering Day will hold the The Cattle Fair. The Cattle Fair is not organised by the Puck Fair Committee but operates under a natural pre-ordained Act under Charter granted in 1613.

The Puck Fair offers more than just a look into Ireland’s past, with plenty to do between the coronation and dethroning of King Puck, like:

  • Cultural Exhibitions: Learn about the history and significance of the Puck Fair through interactive displays and exhibitions.
  • Food and Drink: Tons of food stalls with everything from traditional to contemporary dishes.
  • Live Entertainment: Buskers and main stage performers on throughout the whole day
  • Family Activities: A dedicated children’s area – fun for the whole family, as well as puppeteers, stilt walking and more available during the day.
