As September approaches and the back-to-school season begins, many parents, including myself, see this time as the “real” start of the new year—a perfect opportunity to focus on health and fitness goals, not just for ourselves but for our entire families. While there are numerous activities for children to participate in, both within schools and outside, with organisations like the GAA being popular choices, finding a consistent and healthy activity that the whole family can enjoy together can be challenging.
This is where parkrun shines. Parkrun offers a unique opportunity for families to get active together in a supportive, community-driven environment. It’s more than just exercise; it’s about building connections within your community, as parkrun is entirely volunteer-led and free of charge.
Since its debut in Malahide in November 2012, parkrun has rapidly gained popularity, expanding far beyond Dublin to reach every corner of Ireland.
So, what is parkrun?
It’s a free, weekly community event where people of all ages and abilities can walk, jog, run, volunteer, or simply spectate. Each parkrun event covers 5k and takes place every Saturday morning. For younger participants, junior parkrun—a 2k event dedicated to 4-14-year-olds and their families—happens every Sunday morning.
What makes parkrun truly special is its inclusive, welcoming atmosphere. There’s no time limit, and no one finishes last.
How do I join parkrun?
Joining parkrun is easy and free. You only need to register once, whether you plan to walk, jog, run, volunteer, or do a combination of these.
Where is parkrun?
Currently, there are 151 parkrun events happening across the country every weekend, with new locations being added regularly. You can attend any event, on any weekend, wherever you are.
