The History of Darkness into Light
In 2009, in Phoenix Park, 400 individuals embarked on the inaugural Darkness Into Light 5km walk, all in support of Pieta. The event has grown and now draws over 150,000 participants annually.
Each year, this walk not only fosters community connection but also instils hope in those affected by suicide. Through the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, both in Ireland and internationally, the event persists as a beacon of awareness and resilience in the global fight against suicide and self-harm.
In 2012, Darkness Into Light ventured beyond Ireland’s borders, with London hosting the first international event. Since then, our partner charities across the globe, spanning from Seoul to Spain and New Zealand to the Netherlands, have benefitted from an investment exceeding €3.5 million towards local mental health support services.
Fundraising events like Darkness Into Light contribute significantly to Pieta’s operations, with 85% of their funding sourced from such initiatives. Since its inception, Darkness Into Light has enabled Pieta to raise over €36 million, directly supporting individuals impacted by suicide and self-harm. Together, Pieta, Electric Ireland, and our network of partner charities and supporters worldwide have transformed Darkness Into Light into a global testament of solidarity for those affected by suicide and self-harm.
