Bray has been honoured by Time Out magazine as one of the world’s most underrated destinations for the second year in a row.
This charming seaside resort town is one of 24 locations featured on the list, which this year emphasises “destination dupes”; lesser-known, but equally captivating, alternatives to popular cities like Bali, Paris, Barcelona, and Santorini, which are currently facing over tourism issues.
Time Out, a leading media group in travel and hospitality, is known for highlighting the best activities in cities around the globe. Founded in 1968 as a guide to London’s most exciting neighbourhoods, it has evolved into a global network of experts offering insights into top places to visit. Recently, the magazine released its list of the 14 most underrated travel destinations, showcasing everything from tropical islands and pristine lakes to cities rich in history.
Once dubbed the Brighton of Ireland, Bray has secured the 24th spot on the list. The magazine highlights Bray’s appeal, noting its attractive position on the railway line and its proximity to the sea.
“After years of decline, its mile-long Victorian seafront now buzzes with cafés and restaurants,” the editors explain. “You can stroll from the harbour along the esplanade to the 800-foot-high Bray Head, which is worth the hour’s climb for panoramic views from its rocky summit. Recharge at Butler & Barry on the beach, and then enjoy a Guinness at the beloved local haunt, the Harbour Bar.”
Bray is in good company with other stunning destinations such as Côn Đảo in Vietnam, Karpathos in Greece, and Turku in Finland. The top position was awarded to Filandia in Colombia, described by the editors as a “charming small town with multicoloured balconies and rolling green hills,” known for its vibrant architecture and innovative food scene.
Southern Tunisia took the second spot, recommended as an alternative to Morocco and praised for its surreal desert landscapes and dunes ideal for exploration by camel or buggy. São Sebastião in Brazil rounded out the top three, a beautiful destination located three hours’ drive from São Paulo, featuring “a string of impossibly perfect sandy beaches stretching along 62 miles of warm Atlantic waters.”
