My fiancée and I have had a difficult past year with illness and wedding plans falling through. I would like to take her away for a few days to relax and rest. Is there such a thing as a couples’ spa break? JMcK, Kildare.
When all the health and wellness trend began, initially it was women that embraced it. They soon saw the benefits of taking care of their health and enjoying being pampered. Spa and wellness centres appeared all around the country. Now it has become a much more encompassing experience for couples, with many places having couples therapy rooms.
There are quite a few nice places around the country that welcome couples, and have shared treatments. Powerscourt Springs reopened earlier this year and is in a beautiful location near Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow. It is an adults-only facility and is a health farm rather than a hotel.
Couples are welcome here and they have a special package that will include a picnic with bubbly, a spa treatment, yoga and meditation. Leisure facilities include an indoor pool, forest trail, river meadow walks and quiet areas to relax. Food is healthy and delicious and there is a bar with nice cocktails.
An overnight stay with a two-course dinner and breakfast will start from €190pps midweek and from €215pps at weekends. You can add an extra night from €110. Find out more about Powerscourt Springs here, or call on (01) 6285360.

There are many hotels around the country that have spa facilities for couples. In Kildare, Carton House Hotel has recently undergone a major refurbishment, including an upgraded spa and wellness area. It is a tranquil place set on 1,100 acres of parkland and woodlands. There are lovely walking and cycling trails around the estate, as well as an indoor swimming pool, gym and thermal facilities. An overnight spa package in a Garden Wing room with breakfast, and a 55-minute spa treatment starts at €460 for two. Find out more about Carton House on their website, or call on (01) 505 2000.
It is a good idea to add your spa and other treatments at the time of booking, these resorts can be busy. See more spa breaks for couples at Spas.ie.
